HC Youth Partnering In Inner-City Revitalization

It's been quite a summer for some of the residents of the 46803 community.  Through a grant from the LCMS National Housing Support's (NHSC) Helping Hand's Initiative, local church Holy Cross Lutheran coordinated with Lewis King's Community Outreach to do an owner-occupied housing rehabilitation program for low-income households.

The target neighborhood was in the 46803 zip code of Fort Wayne (a mile-radius around King's Community Center).  Here the "working poor" have barely enough to pay the bills for ongoing utilities, medical bills, and other necessities.  Needed home improvements often get pushed to the side.  Fourteen home projects were started by the Laborers for Christ, a group of committed Christians who travel around the country to manually assist with ministry project remodels or builds in May. In coordination with King's Community Outreach, financial counseling and support were also available.

Some of those home repair projects will now be completed the week of July 17-21 by the youth of Holy Cross Lutheran and Promise Ministries, ending with a block party on July 20th starting at 5:30 pm in the lot directly across from King's Community on 502 E. Pontiac.  The block party is open to all!  There will be free food, inflatables, an a snow cone truck and more!

We got GREAT media coverage on Tuesday evening on NBC news. Click here to check it out!
