Child Abuse Discussion
Holy Cross Parents,
This past summer, the state of Indiana created a new mandate for this and future school years. The state passed a law (IC 20-19-3-11 and IC 20-30-5-5.7) which states that schools “shall provide age appropriate and research and evidence based instruction on child abuse and child sexual abuse to students in kindergarten through grade 12.” This instruction must be provided by someone who has "expertise in the area of child abuse." This curriculum must also meet certain state standards.
Because we at Holy Cross believe that Christ is the foundation of all things, we wanted to ensure that the abuse curriculum that was provided to our students came from a Christ-centered approach. With our connection to Cross Connections counseling, we have a direct link to qualified individuals to lead this program from a Christ-centered perspective. Dr. Dohrmann, who is a familiar person to many of our families, from Cross Connections, will be teaching our students on this topic on Tuesday, May 7th.
The students will be in groups, K-1, 2-3, 4-5 & 6-8, and each presentation will be specifically tailored to the age of the students in the group. Dr. Dohrmann has taught this curriculum in other Lutheran schools this year and we are confident that it meets the state requirement and is also appropriate for each age group. If you have any questions about this new law or Cross Connections, please feel free to contact me (739-6510 or firstname.lastname@example.org).
